Giuseppe Alberigo Award 2019

Fscire and Emilia-Romagna Region, together with the European Academy of Religion, are glad to announce the second edition of the Alberigo Award.
Giuseppe Alberigo (1926-2007) was an historian of great magnitude who was able to combine exceptional, exemplary rigour in research and a unique timeliness in the intellectual and theological debate of his time, thereby offering a precious contribution to sowing the seeds of criticism in generations of scholars internationally.
In memory of his fervour and wealth of critical studies, the Region of Emilia-Romagna and the Fondazione per le scienze religiose Giovanni XXIII, to which Alberigo dedicated 54 years of his life, will confere a sum of € 30,000 (Senior Award, € 20,000; Junior Award € 10,000), which will reward scholars engaged in a field of religious science, whether historical, exegetical, theological or other, without any form of limitation concerning the type of study.
Candidacies must be presented by the authors themselves and/or third parties – scholars, centres, journals, editors, associations, academies or departments – provided that they be registered members of the European Academy of Religion (EuARe), by sending a paper or digital copy of their books published within the last three years, or works that have yet to be published, in any field of religious science. Every candidacy must be accompanied by a brief presentation of the particular aspects of the volume or paper, the curriculum vitae of its author(s) and the indication of the category of the Award applied for. Candidacies will be received by July 31st, 2019.
The three finalists in each category will be invited to present a lecture at the annual convention of the European Academy of Religion in 2020, when the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region or his delegate will confer the awards in a special ceremony.
Establishment of the network of European Centers on Religion and Politics

Over the past three decades, a significant number of centers for "religion and public life" have emerged in European universities. During the third congress of the European Academy of Religion on March 4 2019, the leaders of some of these centers launched the network of European Centers on Religion and Politics.
This new initiative has two major goals. The first one is to improve communication and to foster inter-disciplinary and comparative approaches on the topic of religion and politics across religious traditions political contexts and historical periods among academic institutions in Europe and beyond. The second one is be a platform to disseminate research findings and projects in order to create a fruitful interactions with media and policy-makers working at the interface of religion and politics.

Call for Papers. Nationalism, Populism and Protestant Political Thought

Many Protestant communities are divided over nationalism and populism. Some scholars have claimed that Protestant theological undercurrents legitimise support for right-wing populism, whereas others believe that their theology prohibits such associations. This international conference convenes scholars, church leaders and other practitioners to discuss ways in which Protestant political thought might be related to these burgeoning political movements. What strands within Protestant political thought have been and are being enlisted to legitimise nationalism or populism? Why has there been a close historical association between both Protestantism and the nation-state, and Protestantism and democracy, and do these associations persist today? What resources within Protestantism have been, are being or might be invoked to critique nationalism and populism? How does Protestant political thought compare with Catholic social teaching on this question?
The Cambridge Institute on Religion and International Studies (CIRIS) invites proposals for the international conference 'Nationalism, Populism, and Protestant Political Thought', hosted by CIRIS for April 15-17, 2020.
Paper proposals will be received before 18 November 2019.

The Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Bologna presents the ISA Topic "Identity: one, none, one hundred thousand", a cycle of initiatives dedicated to the problem of the continuous definition and redefinition if the different identities that characterize people, society and knowledge.
The events will take place from October 2019 to summer 2020.
The legal protection of religious minorities in democratic systems is an increasingly relevant issue. Gaining a deeper knowledge about how to handle it is nowadays one of the most challenging topic in law and religion studies.
The conference (Department of Law of the University of Bergamo, Friday, 27th September 2019) will offer both an historical and contemporary overview of the issue and will provide new inputs and fresh thinking about how to protect and promote religious minorities in Italy and Europe.

Thanks to its partnership with the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the European Academy of Religion has been enlisted in the report on Surveying the Landscape of International Religious Freedom Policy.
This report, issued by the Religious Freedom Institute (Washington, DC), documents the efforts of governments and multilateral institutions to advance international religious freedom.
Brill Research Perspectives in Religion and Politics

Brill announces the first issue of the Brill Research Perspectives in Religion and Politics (BRP): Global Religious and Secular Dynamics: The Modern System of Classification by Professor José Casanova (Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, & World Affairs, Georgetown University).
The journal has two main goals: provide a platform for the burgeoning scholarship on religion and politics that cannot find visibility within the constricted boundaries of either religious studies or political science; examine topics that are intensely debated in the public space from an objective, data-driven perspective.
EuARe former President, Professor Jocelyne Cesari, and EuARe Secretary General, Dr. Francesca Cadeddu, are part of the Editorial Board of BRP, respectively as Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor.
#EuARe2019, L'Avenir de l'œcuménisme. Conference proceedings

AISR (Académie internationale des sciences religieuses) proudly announces the publishing of «L’avenir de l’oecuménisme (1). Académie internationale des sciences religieuses. Bologne, 6-8 mars 2019».
The conference proceedings appeared in the journal Istina (LXIV/2, 2019, p. 141-215) and collect the interventions offered during the conference day the Association held last March in the context of the EuARe annual conference.
Two more interventions are announced for publication in the following issue of Istina (LXIV/3, 2019).

In occasione del prossimo convegno annuale della European Academy of Religion, la Fondazione per le scienze religiose inaugura un contest per le scuole superiori: Le religioni in città. Simboli, luoghi, cibi e persone.
Il contest è aperto a tutte le classi degli istituti superiori del territorio della provincia di Bologna. Le classi o i singoli gruppi aderenti al progetto sono chiamati a ideare gif, piccoli cortometraggi, illustrazioni, animazioni, fumetti e fotografie, volti a rappresentare le religioni nella città e nella provincia di Bologna.
I vincitori saranno premiati tra il 1 marzo e il 30 aprile 2020 con l'assegnazione di un buono di 500 euro per l’acquisto di libri e in un’intervista trasmessa all’interno della rubrica televisiva Il Sabbatico, in onda tutti i sabati su Rai News.
Adesione al progetto entro il 31 ottobre 2019.

The Florence School of Advanced Studies for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue with the support of the EUI’s School of Transnational Governance (STG) organizes an Executive Training Seminar on the topic: “What Is the Problem with Religion? A New Approach for an Inclusive Society”.
The seminar will take place from 11th to 15th November 2019 in Florence at the European University Institute and it is a relevant educational opportunity for those who (for work or study) are in contact with different religions.

Journalism and Religion in Central and Eastern Europe

Issues related to religion show up frequently in news coverage in European media. News reports regularly describe the intertwining of religion with migration, politics, culture and public life. Faith plays a role in the growing polarization in society, the rise of populist parties in almost every country, and the challenges posed by fake news and hate speech. In this context, journalists in Europe face an increasingly complex task in their newsrooms.
To explore these complex topics, the International Association of Religion Journalists (IARJ) is holding a regional conference in Warsaw (Poland) on June 13-14 under the title Journalism and Religion in Central and Eastern Europe.
The conference, hosted by the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies of the University of Warsaw (UW), is organized under the patronage of the European Academy of Religion.

Plures – Master in Pluralismo religioso e sapere storico

La Fondazione per le scienze religiose Giovanni XXIII avvia un Master in Pluralismo religioso e sapere storico (Plures).
Il nuovo percorso formativo di Fscire intende offrire ai partecipanti, provenienti da percorsi formativi e professionali diversi, un ampio spettro di conoscenze nell'ambito delle scienze storico-religiose, fornendo contenuti, metodi e strumenti per la comprensione dei testi, delle culture, delle dottrine, delle tradizioni e delle pratiche dei tre monoteismi: ebraismo, cristianesimo e islam.
Ricercatori e docenti universitari di fama internazionale sono stati invitati a tenere le lezioni e i seminari di discussione, con l'obiettivo di fornire ai partecipanti gli strumenti per interpretare i fenomeni storico-religiosi del passato e comprendere le dinamiche del presente, in vista anche dei loro prevedibili sviluppi per il futuro.
Le lezioni si terranno tra novembre 2019 e aprile 2020 presso la Fondazione per le scienze religiose Giovanni XXIII (via San Vitale, 114 – Bologna 40125) per un totale di 120 ore, distribuite su 11 fine settimana. Iscrizioni entro l'11 ottobre 2019.
Call for Papers. Re-Enchanting the World: Spiritualities and Religions of the Third Millennium

The Center for Study of New Religions (CESNUR), the research center CRAFT (Contemporary religions and faith and transition), the Italian Association of Sociology (AIS), the Center of religious sciences "Erik Peterson", and the International Society for the Study of New Religions (ISSNR) organize the conference Re-Enchanting the World: Spiritualities of the Third Millennium.
The conference (Turin, 5-7 September 2019) will: assess the international, global-local, and local dimensions of religious change, religious pluralism, spirituality, minority religions, new religious movements, new movements within Islam and Christianity, Esotericism and the New Age; survey the current situation; consider the fate of religious and spiritual groups as they change and relate to everyday life in an increasingly multi-cultural and trans-national world.
Papers will be accepted from a variety of perspectives (sociology, history, anthropology, psychology, law, religious studies).
Those who wish to present papers are invited to submit their proposals by April 10, 2019. Speakers will be allocated 20 minutes for their talks.

The University in Sofia is pleased to announce the ReIReS School 22-27 September 2019 on the use and study of special documents. Especially – but not only – PhD students and postdocs are welcome, both from ReIReS partners and other institutions.
The school in Sofia will make scholars familiar with special, less known and remote collections like the unique collection of Greek, Arabic and Slavonic manuscripts in Center Dujcev, the digital version of the Zographou manuscripts collection, which is not accessible in situ (on the Mount Athos in Greece) to female researchers; with the history of Bulgarian Church and religious literature and the history of the oldest and biggest Bulgarian monastery and its role for preserving the religious identity of the Bulgarian population.
The school is open to scholars affiliated to the ReIReS consortium and to max. five persons from outside the consortium. Scholars from outside the consortium will pay a registration fee of € 395.00.

The Fondazione per le scienze Religiose Giovanni XXIII in Bologna is pleased to announce the next ReIReS Course on digital humanities and religious studies, 3-5 July 2019 in Bologna. Especially – but not only – PhD students and postdocs are welcome, both from ReIReS partners and other institutions.
The course offers a perspective on excellence in Italian DH and on pioneering studies in the European and international context. In particular, it focuses on digital libraries and other features of Italian research, with special regard to religious studies. The expertise of the scholars offering lessons and training activities will be matched by theoretical and technical transfer on specific topics, such as analysis of Conciliar texts and Qur’anic palimpsests and manuscripts.

Call for Applications. ReIReS Transnational Access to Special Collections and Archival Documents

The EU funded project “Research Infrastructure on Religious Studies” (ReIReS) offers scholars the opportunity to spend two weeks in one of fourteen outstanding European research centres (libraries and archives) in Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, and Italy to carry out their research project in Historical Religious Studies.
The sources available include all kinds of material about the history of Christianity in Europe and also some of the most relevant collections of Jewish and Muslim documents and books.
Applications are welcome before February 18, 2019. Scholars, experts in historical religious studies or curators of special collections and archives are encouraged to apply.
